Diwali, the radiant Festival of Lights, is a joyful event lasting five days. It’s an important festival, representing the victory of good over evil; this means that no matter how dark the world can feel or how hard things have been, there is a day in which you can reflect on the goodness in your life, and openly celebrate joy and new beginnings with your loved ones.

Of course, light is a big component—traditionally, clay lamps called diyas are lit, and there are other beautiful, colorful celebrations that end in fireworks displays.
You can use your permanent outdoor lights to make Diwali lighting much more accessible. Of course, the Festival of Lights is all about the lighting, but it can cause some anxiety and stress in the run-up: decorating both the interior and the exterior of your home requires a lot of effort, and if you have young kids around, having open flames around can be tricky.
From flickering candle-like twinkle lights to traditional color options, your permanent track lights or flood lights can really make the occasion extra special. Below are some of our favorite ways to decorate for Diwali with creative outdoor lighting.
Complementary Colors
The traditional Diwali colors are blue, red, yellow, and magenta—bright yellow and gold are particularly symbolic of the triumph of light over darkness. You can set your lights to these colors, or you can keep things simple with warm golden/yellow tones that pick up the other colors in the rest of your decor.
Our warm white lights are particularly fitting for Diwali. They are cozily, heartwarming, and welcoming for guests.
You can take a look at the patterns we have to download in our app. Just open ‘Downloads’ and browse through the app to see if you find something you like. If you’re looking for warm whites specifically, you can take the following steps:
- Go to the controller by tapping on it
- Select the color tab on the bottom left
- Go to the color selector and select ‘Favorites’
- You should see warm white as an option. This uses our Warm White LED diode to create a true warm white. Alternatively, you can go for bright white, which uses the RGB and warm white diodes to create a very bright white.
- Select your white option and watch it illuminate your lights
We love our warm white because it’s harder to find in other types of outdoor lights—it has a much warmer feel than RGB white, which tends to be cooler.
The color selector tool can be used to choose from millions of colors. And you can incorporate warm white into patterns, too—but more on that in the next section!
Starry Nights
Our pre-built animations are perfect for Diwali. For example, the animation ‘Starry’ is excellent for Diwali because it offers short bursts of color that feel really appropriate for the most colorful event! It has track lights that randomly switch between colors—which you can set yourself and have fun playing around with.
We love to use this animation in the traditional Diwali colors—it looks fantastic. You can see an example of how vivid the colors are in this post from our Instagram account.
To select ‘Starry,’ here’s what you need to do:
- Go to ‘Create a Pattern’
- Select the ‘Starry’ animation
- Select your chosen colors (you could alternate between blue, red, yellow, and magenta, for example)
- Tap ‘Save’
You can then go back to this custom pattern any time you want. This is a pretty animation that will give you intermittent bursts of color, reflecting the colorful nature of Diwali itself.
Soft Flickering Lights
The lovely thing about Diwali is the soft, flickering glow of candles, diyas, and fairy lights. Your outdoor lighting can be an excellent accompaniment to other decor and can directly complement your outdoor decor, as well as set the tone for your indoor decor. Our animation ‘Sway’ is a good option for this.
To create a soft flickering light effect, you can do the following:
- Tap ‘Create a pattern’
- Choose the ‘Sway’ animation
- Choose the colors you would like—warm white is good for mimicking the soft flicker of a candle
- Slow down the speed—you can play around with this until you find something that you prefer
- Tap ‘Save’
This will create a softly flickering, candle-like effect that will feel like a real celebration of Diwali, and you can save the pattern so that it’s ready for next year, too.
Of course, the same goes for business owners with commercial track lights, too—joining in with celebrations like Diwali helps to create community spirit, and it’s easy to do using the app.
